Privacy policy
Your sounds stay on your iPhone.
Last updated 4 November 2026
- The app collects no personal data. We have no servers, accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking.
- Microphone audio is processed on your iPhone. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
- Recordings, names and notes are stored only on your device, until you choose to share them.
- Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details.
Who we are
Stethoscope: Body Sounds ("Stethoscope", "the app") is made by Peter Mapley, an independent developer. For any privacy question, email peter@mapley.dev.
Microphone audio
Stethoscope asks for microphone access so you can listen, watch the spectrogram and record. Live audio is analysed on your iPhone to draw the waveform and spectrogram, apply listening filters and estimate a heart rate in Heart mode. That processing happens on the device; no audio, sound features or estimates are uploaded.
The app also holds the most recent fifteen seconds of audio in memory so you can review it. That audio is discarded unless you choose to save it, and it is cleared when listening stops.
Recordings and notes
Recordings you save, and the names, notes and playback settings you give them, are stored in the app's private storage on your iPhone. They leave your device only when you share them yourself, for example through the share sheet, and then they go wherever you send them.
Like other app data, your recordings may be included in iCloud or computer backups of your iPhone if you have backups turned on. Those backups are managed by Apple and by you, under Apple's terms. Deleting a recording in the app, or deleting the app, removes the recordings from your device.
Purchases
Recording Plus is sold through the App Store. Apple processes the payment and manages subscriptions; we never receive your name, email address or payment information. The app checks your purchase status with Apple's StoreKit on your device. Apple gives developers aggregated sales and subscription reports that don't identify you. See Apple's privacy policy for how Apple handles this data.
Diagnostics
The app contains no analytics or crash-reporting code. If you have chosen in iOS Settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may provide anonymised crash reports and usage statistics to us. You can change this at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
What we don't do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No location, contacts, photos or health-app data.
- No advertising, tracking or data sale, and no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
- No cloud storage of your audio by us.
This website
This site sets no cookies and uses no analytics or third-party scripts. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes technical information such as your IP address to deliver the pages and protect against abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. If you email us, we use your message and address only to reply.
Children
The app collects no personal data from anyone, including children. It is not a medical device and should not be used to monitor a pregnancy or a child's health.
Your rights
Because the app doesn't collect personal data, we hold nothing about you from the app. You control your recordings on your device. If you have emailed us and want that correspondence deleted, or have any other request under data-protection law such as the GDPR, contact peter@mapley.dev.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
